This
course will examine a wide range of global and multicultural issues, including
the concentration of global media ownership, multiculltural media within
and outside the United States, the international system of communication,
alternative media, the impact of new technologies, and global and multicultural
issues in news, advertising, and entertainment media. The conflict between
the increasing commercialization and privatization of the media and its
role of public service will be examined, as well as the political, social
and economic ramifications of such media issues as stereotyping, ethnocentrism,
racism, patriotism, and international conflicts. The course will include
screenings, research, case studies, readings and discussion.
