Ramapo Students

Creative Forms of Cheating

a student wrote math formulas on his palm

A test was given in a computer lab, some students had e-mailed themselves notes and opened them up during the test.

Already completing test questions in a "blue book", then switching the book w/ the one the professor gave in class as they were done during the exam period.

As a "mature" student I have not observed or heard about any type of cheating at Ramapo, but I do understand (from teachers and the handbook) that cheating is treated very seriously and punishment includes Dean review and possible dismissal from college. Maybe if I were an resident student of average age I would be more likely to hear rumors - but in my case I know of no cheating.

assumed data storage on handheld devices, trading of data through infra red port..etc.

Being able to swap blue books with neighbors working on different sets of questions.

Bringing cheat notes at the time of the exam and hiding it under the test paper

cheat sheets

Cheat sheets and helping friends with papers.

cheat sheets under shirts

concealing of cheat sheets... i will not however tell you the good hiding places as then you will look for them

creating a crib sheet and leaving it in the bathroom.

Do you really think I'm going to tell you this? You people just can't keep up with the different ways that people cheat today, and you are trying to get the very people who are clever enough to cheat to give away their secrets. I am not a cheater, but everyone is going to do their own thing. You people need to work on a little word I like to call "subtlety".

Fraternities using their pledges with high GPAs as personal paper writers.

Had a writing test in a huge hall, approx. 500 students.. friend - who is writing major and very talented, unthreatened by tests, uninhibited regarding grades... took test for me.. signed my name and SS#.

Haha..can't disclose that information, but there are alot.

haven't noticed any cheating

haven't seen any

I actually witnessed recently a female in the front row or 40+ student class copy from the person next to her three weeks in a row. The girl must need new glasses because she was leaning over and squinting at the other students test. The class has four professors present during class.

I am currently witnessing a person with whom I have been working on a group project repeatedly use the internet or her sister's graduate papers to write papers. She has done this in the past and continues to get by.

I do not know people who cheat regularly or often at all. Smart students don't need to cheat, and bad students will still get bad grades even if they do. I have therefore not observed much cheating at all going on here.

I have never seen anything beyond someone looking at another person's paper.

I have never witnessed any actual cheating. Someone had told me firsthand on his experience.

I have not experienced much cheating at Ramapo. The best I guess is to submit close to same paper for different classes, but seeing as it was a very similar assignment, I do not consider it cheating.

I have not seen or participate in any cheating since attending Ramapo College.

i have not witnessed "creative" types. just plain cheating

I have not witnessed any "creative" cheating, but I have witnessed students cheating if the professor walks out of the classroom for a minute, or copying from another students exam or homework.

I have not witnessed any cheating since I have attended Ramapo College. At present, I'm temporarily disabled and cannot work or participate in any activity.

I have really seen any types of creative cheating at college. The type of things I have seen very rarely in class are just standard glances

I have seen people text message answers to each other on their cell phones.

I have seen people write answers on their bodies.

I have seen sority sisters have a system in place, where they organize all the work they have done from their classes, and hand out papers to anyone taking that class again.

i have seen students prepare an exam at home and hand it in during class already prepared. another thing is i have witnessed students take exams for other students.

I have witnessed people looking at other peopled tests, or people sharing information on projects.

I have witnessed someone with cheat notes in the back of their pocket book.

i have witnessed students having another student go to the teacher and block his view from seeing the rest of the class. i have also witnessed students leaning backwards to another student and dropping off the blue book, in a sorta swap.

I haven't seen anything yet.

i havent witnessed any

I haven't witnessed any.

I knew someone who whould make up false data for the chemistry lab class instead of giving reasons for the inaccurate information collected in the actual lab. She was good at it too.

I met this girl whom was bragging about her special water-bottle. She had come up with an idea to take off the lable of her poland spring water-bottle and write information on the inner white part of the lable. She then put the lable back on the bottle and took an exam with the water-bottle on her desk.

I once observed someone putting their page of notes on the floor facing up and believed they were looking towards them every now and then during the test. But, I was not sure.

I once saw a girl who had written out all the answers on her thigh, and then wore a really short skirt to the exam. Since the stuff was on her upper thigh, she though no one could really check her because it would be inappropriate.

i really have not been witness to many incidents of cheating.

i really only am notified of the cheating off someone's elses test for i don't believe that getting help on a paper is concidered cheating

I remember onceseeing a student have a cheat cheat scribbled on the brim of his hat so when he truned his at around, he could read the answers.

i saw someone write answers in the inside of a clear water bottle label

I witnessed someone write information on the inside of their leg.

In a literature class, there was a student who plagiarized major parts of a book that was originally written in French. He apparently used an online language translator and pasted the translation in his paper, putting his own name upon it. He was reprimanded by the professor, and nothing further was done.

In my Western Civilization class we were all required to visit the Metropolitan Museum and write a paper. Instead of goin gto the museum a group of students took a vitual toor of the Museum online and wrote the paper.

In one of my classes last semester, we had to read this book of 20 short stories and write at least a one page summary of each. The day is was due, my friend and I went to dinner before the class, since we had finished earlier, and we saw that about 7-8 of our classmates were sitting at a nearby table sharing what each had read so they could type up their summaries. Since I had read the whole thing on my own, I did not feel that was right at all.

index cards, writing on legs for girls and wearing a skirt, puting info into pens

Ionce saw a panda bear standing in the bacak of the room with the answers to a test shaved in its fur

ive never seen neone cheat, or have cheated myself

I've seen many forms from writing on body parts, to having flash cards under the exams.

I've seen students have paper notes brought to a test...

I've seen students tape cheat sheets under their shirts and turn their shirt up during the test.

just normal stuff

LAst semester I noticed a couple of kids in the library before our economics exam typing in all the review quetsions and answers into their calculator memories.

learning

Leaving notes on purse

listening to a walkman that is playing a "study tape"

looking at a sheet

many students can be seen in the computer labs or in their dorms going to such websites as cheathouse.com. and they get A's. i work my ass off on my own and get the C/C+.... now where is the incentive to do ur own work?

most are just run of the mill holding notes on their lap during a test, or assisting another student who has already taken the course with graded papers

Most commonly are the way people hide or use cheat sheets.

Never encountered any creative ways of cheating as of now.

none have been really creative.. just the regular.. writing on the desk, or on body parts.

None really...someone i knew did a 6 page paper for his ex girlfriend.

None that I have seen personaly, or remember

None.

None. People aren't very creative, from what I've seen.

Not sure if this is "cheating, " but I sometimes attempt to negotiate with instructor for extra points on "gray area" items.

Note cards on the seat under a persons legs.

nothing creative.

nothing more than just the occasional sharing of work and wandering eyes on a test

nothing out of the ordinary

nothing that I am aware of

Off hand I can't think of any cheating that I have actually witnessed where the person actually was cheating.

Open conversation during exams about the material being tested on.

Paraphrasing

People copying off each other or having cheat sheets

People usually aren't too creative, they just whisper and tell answers, or look at each other's tests.

people write cheat sheets on water bottle labels.

People writing on the walls or desks before a test. Also the way clubs, or Greeks share all their old work from previous classes.

person had paper taped to inside of sunglasses with crib notes

Plagiarism, Cheat Sheet.

Playing the race card. This happens all too often especially in Ramapo. A student recieves a low grade or misses class. THen when the professor tries to confront the student they automaticly go into a hissy fit about how it's cause they are a certain color. Thus forceing the professor against a wall and usually the professor gives in. I have been involved with and seen the use of creative placement of crib notes. From the bottom of shoes to peices of gum. THe placement of the crib note is best placed where the teacher would look odd when they tried to find it.

Programming a graphing calculator with formulas and maybe some answers.

Putting a cheat sheet in one of the little cereat boxes. Text messaging the Q&A

Putting answers in calculators, writing on parts of the body

putting answers underneath the test itself. writing answers on your hand of the desk.

putting paper in a calculator

putting paper inside a clear pen that has notes from the class on it, writing on the desk, cheat sheets on the floor, notes in graping calculator, writing on your chair, writing on your body

putting the notes in the notebook so you can open the notebook with a foot. casually stretching to look around.

sending text messages, or using instant messenger

Several times I have witnessed students hiding a small cheat sheet under their test, and copying from the cheat sheet when the professor was not looking. I have witnessed others peaking at other individuals tests. I have seen people program formulas into their calculators for cuse on tests in lasses that use math formulas. Teachers should check calculators before tests for programs that may aide a student in taking a test.

since I have not too much time on the compus, therefore, I have not witnessed any one cheating nor, have I seen any one doing so.

sitcking the answers to the exam in the front of their pants... using a big sweatshirt to cover the buldge

Someone taking a power point presentation done to market a product and using a large portion as their own work.

storing info on calculators

students "coughing-out", like counting. for example one for true or letter A two for false or letter B, etc.

students get papers and hand them in to a different professor for the same subject.

Students openly sharing exams and walking around a room sharing answers during a final in which the professor left the room for prolonged periods of time.

Students writing answers on body parts so they can cheat.

taking a "blue book" and writing the essay uestion before midterm and then turning it in the day of the midterm

text messaging

The best type of cheating comes from the most intelligent people--they are they are the people you would never expect. These are the people that the professors would never expect and therefore nab everyone else because the professor just assumes that the work is original--the smart people, the really smart people cover their tracks well.

The biggest problem I've witnessed here at Ramapo is students cheating on exams. One example of a creative way students did this was in my genetics class. The students were Russian, so during the exam they told each other the answers in this language. The professor seemed to not notice this. So after this happened again on our second exam a student approched him and told him what was going on. Yet he didn't take any disiplinary action against these two students at all; and he didn't even really address the cheating issue. Needless to say, these two students ended up with A averages and were exempt from the final examination.

The most creative type of cheating that I have witnessed was when several students coned the proffesor into given them the answer to several questions earning them a very nice passing grade.

The ones in the movie "Cheaters"...I suggest you see it, its quite good.

The only cheating I have ever seen was not creative at all. It was simply two students "colaborating" during an exam.

There has been one where students put answers in their hat and then put their hat down and look at the answers.

There is no ceativity just a struggle to obtain a good or passing grade.

This really isn't creative, but I did witness someone in one of my psychology classes cheating during the midterm. It was just me and this girl when the professor walked out of the room for a minute or two. She opened up her book on the table and copied some of her notes onto her paper. The professor never told us to take our notebooks, if you had any, off of the table.

using other students papers after they have already taken the course is the most common type of cheating I have witnessed.

Using the same paper for more than one course

using/submitting materials/topics from Course A for credit in Course B without permission from both instructors

usually, the people creative enough to come up with an original method do not need to cheat in the first place. so, none.

Very little creativity, all the more mind boggling when students get away with it.

What i seen which was recent was someone had a tiny piece of paper with almost 15 words and definations.

When I was in a community college, a student called from the counseling center asking people to write her a paper. She did this in front of a counselor who had allowed her to use the phone but he thought it was to find someone only to type her work until he heard her words.

When people program the answers to a math test in their calculator

when people save their old papers and test and make a file out of them for other students to use.

Why the hell would I willingly tell you my secrets of cheating...

with online exams, 1-2 or 1-3 people would be together and do separate areas of the exam. then everyone would copy each others answers.

witnessed: writing answers inside a waterbottle label, and resealing it

Writing an "over extensive" bibliography so the teacher wouldn't bother checking every one of the sources.

Writing answers on arms or on bottoms of shoes. Taping dheat sheets inside calculators

Writing answers on hand, bringing in notes for a test, writing answers on desks.

Writing answers on the brims of baseball caps, then taking them off and fooling around with them to get the answers. It's pretty pathetic, but I've seen it work often.

Writing it on the person that sits infront of you back. Then her shirt rises up and jeans go down when she sits. Its a perfect score because you head stays straight forward on the paper.

writing notes on hands

writing on desks

writng information on: clothes, skin on the hands and other places

Writting answers on a shoe

you couldn't even possibly imagine what i havce seen

Ramapo Students

Rationales for Cheating

alot of work and not enough time to do it all and have a social life. Grant it you are not in school to party but the real world comes up on you fast when you are in school so in order to live it up the way you want you have to do what you have to do to get by.

Anyone who cheats doe it just to get a good grade.

As as a senior, there have been times when I have been overwhelmed by the amount of work that I have. There have been moments while working on lengthy papers that I considered plagiarising extensively to finish on time. I admit to paraphrasing a source, but would never consider turning in an entire paper written by another person.

Because these teachers are getting paid to do a job and then keep going when ahlf of the class don't even understand whats going on. Come on tution is over $7000, and it is still rising.

cheating is bad...therefore i do not engage in such activities

cheating is cheating there is no rationale, it's just the lazy way out

Cheating tends to be out of desperation in my opinion, if I didnt have time to study, or if I found material more difficult than I expected.

Concern for grades, deadlines.

Did not understand the work and had no time because I had numerous other projects due, feeling like I was not going to get everything done.

does not apply

Fear of failing. Hope for a decent grade.

Forgot almost everything i learned.

Frustration at hard work with mediocre results

Have no "conscience" re same..., although, at this age, who cares re: grades, etc.. just give me the f... piece of paper.... cheating is just one more creative way of getting what you need/want?... actually knowing the information needed is another story... accounting, medical, biology, law, etc.. the rest is bull shit and who needs math????

have not

Haven't

haven't done it

honestly, I have never cheated in college.

i am not a cheater!! but i know people who do

I am really bad at memorizing. Some professors want to know exact Theories/facts for 3-5 essays on exams along with MC and T/F.

i did make a mistake.... i handed in someone elses work and changed the times electronically (she left her disk in the computer). I immediatetly admitted and faced the consequences but left me feeling guilty. It was a final... when I had not much limited time.

I do not cheat on my exams or homework. I would only be cheating myself. I only get the grade that I deserve, not the grade I get from copying someone elses work.

i dont

i don't cheat

I don't cheat.

I don't consider working wtih others cheating as long as you're doing your own work. I find that sometimes I understand things better after a discussion with my peers.

I don't see any problem with using materials/topics from Course A to achieve credit in Course B. I don't understand the concept of self plagiarism.

I have borrowed aspects of papers in an effort to fill space in a paper with a limit. I felt I had exhausted the issue and this individual had some fluff that I could add to my paper. The purpose was to fulfill the page requirement.

I have forged excuses for paper extensions because of excessive work commitments, family functions, class work, etc.

I have had so much work to complete all at the same time, especially during finals because a lot of my classes give take-home exams, that I needed help filling up the required pages in order to pass.

I have never cheated in any way.

I have never cheated in college or high school, I believe it is wrong to do so.

i have never cheated in the classroom. maybe sometimes i had done some group work outside the classroom. my motive was to get the work done, but yet to also get a better understanding of the material.

i have NEVER cheated nor ever will. i have a big problem with those who do because i am personally on scholarship and i know MANY, 10+ other scholars at this school who cheat regularly just to keep their grades up. personally, i can not possibly understand how they got the scholarship in the first place

I have never cheated on a test or plagerized a paper, but often times when I do not understand an assignment it is easier for me to approach another student for help rather than a teacher.

I have never cheated.

I have never done anything I considered cheating. Having a friend help is not cheating in my eyes.

I have never engaged in cheating because I do not want to get in trouble.

i have not cheated nor assisted in cheating

I have not engaged in cheating at Ramapo.

I have not engaged in cheating behaviors while in college.

I have not personally engaged in cheating.

I have not really cheated...i do understand how pressure could get to someone though.

I have not used someone elses papers but i have allowed others to use papers I have already written for a class, although if I had the opportunity to used some elses papers I would. This is simply because I think that most of the papers, especially for general education courses are useless. Most of the papers I have written are no interest to me and I believe professors assign them simply to assign a paper.

i have not, if i did it would be bc the work load is quite hefty

i have used web sites that give clff notes on assignments for better understanding of reading that wasn't comprehendible.

I haven't personally ingaged in cheating however I know student's who have because there are professors in Ramapo College who load so much work on students they never have a chance to learn, they are too busy writing useless term papers or cramming information in for a test... there is no happy medium so they cheat to get by.

I haven't.

I look at the sides and sometimes I put my sight in a specific place trying to think about the uestion and how to answer it. However, I never cheated.

I need to pass.

I occasionally use verbage from sources in my papers because I am a poor composer and can not think of any other way to express the same thought.

I often cheated in classes that I was required to take but felt had no relevance to my present or future work. In addition, required classes that taught information that I was previously educated to be wrong I felt was just 'working through the system' so I could graduate. Forcing a student to take a class where a professor forces their views and does not 'teach' is asking the students to be trained monkeys, not enlightened individuals. If you want me to dance at the end of a leash, I am going to do it in a manner that is easiest for me.

I once cheated on a final exam because although the class wasnt a core class, I needed it for credits and didnt want to recieve a low grade. I found the class to be utterly boring both in material and the professor so I decided to cheat on the final in order to get a b+ rather than a C, which is probably what I would have gotten.

I Paraphrased on some sentences, it was a draft paper and at the time I was not aware that paraphrasing was plagarizing.

i rather fail and understand from hindsight

I really don't cheat, but who has not looked for an answer once and a while during an exam of your co-student? I would think 95% of all college students and graduates have! Including our very own president.

I suppose if you consider working with other students to prepare for assignments and tests cheating then I would be considered guilty. I have always found using this method as a productive way to enhance my learning. I am not sure the professors would agree. An example might be, if I have a paper or report due and I am having difficulty starting it and one of my classmates has completed theirs the insight they can give me on the structure has always helped me get started, but I have always completed it on my own.

I think because they care too much about their education to just sit there and fail when they can do something about it whether its immoral or not.

I was failing the class. and it was the final and i had to get at leats an 85 on the final. i knew that i would not be able to get that no matter how much i studied, so i asked a friend of mine if i had trouble on some questions, if i could copy hers, and she said yes. thanksfully i passed the class because of her and she knows i am greatful for it. i dont feel that i needed to take the class but because of gen-ed reasons, i was stuck taking it.

I was nervous about a question in one of my class and I looked onto another classmate's paper to make sure I was on the right path to the answer

I wasn't motivated for writing a paper and the night before I had a panic attack, so I turned in a paper that wasn't mine.

if students are preped properly for an exam they wouldn't see the need for cheating and/or if grades were solely dependent on 1 exam which may not fully explore one's understanding of the subject students. We need to expand our horizons and seek alternate ways of examination that allow students to show their understanding of subjects through real-life experiences or perhaps customize exams to best fit the student and professor

IMPOSSIBLE labs for Botany class, we formed a group, all wrote up one lab made 3 copies and handed them in seperately.

It is just easier sometimes to copy from someone else if you have a lot of other work to do. Plus, sometimes if you are definite you will not get caught then you dont mind copying.

It was my panda bear and I needed the money.

It was so much information to remember

it's better than failing

I've never engaged in cheating but if i ever would i believe it would be from the constant pressure of not failing from teachers and parents.

jotting down little notes that help me trigger the main part of what i needed to remember for tests

lack of confidence or lack of studying

main cheating behavior i am engaged is preparing crib notes. motivation - when you write them you learn material at the same time. then during the exam you write from them and you memorize material.

make life easier

Most of the time there is too much material per exam. There is limited time to study while working full-time and being a full-time student. It is just too much too remember in such a short period of time. It would be easier if we had more frequent exams that involved less chapters instead of just a huge mid-term and a huge final with everything from the course on it. Having more exams would also give students a better opportunity to get a good grade since there would be more chances and more grades to average in. The way it is now - if you blow the mid-term, you'd better get an A++ on the final or you are screwed for the entire semester and that is not fair.

My friend was in real danger of failing his class so I rewrote an entire paper for him and rechecked the sources. It didn't happen here, though, it happened at a county college.

My lab partner, we had to have the same information, so I just went along with her information.

My rationale for cheating is because of little understanding of the subject matter.

My rationale for doing so...because it is how the system works, it is part of what many, if not most, people need to do to "get ahead." Not only is it pervasive in our school system, but in the economy and the government. In our culture as it currently stands, it is more important that one SEEMS to be a good upstanding person, than to actually BE a good upstanding person. In a competitive system it is the nature of the beast.

needed framework for a philosophy paper and slacked off... took the easier route once...

No cheating on my part- I come from the Naval Academy and it was something I just cannot do because of honor- simple as that.

No have never and will never enaganged in cheating there is no excuse for it.If you know it you know if not you are only cheating yourself.

No I have never cheated.

no i have not

no i have not cheated

no i havent

No, i would not cheat in college its to much of a risk, but in high school i did, because if i got cought in high school they just call your parents. in college you get kick out. its not worth it.

None. Most people do so because of unreal standards set upon them by family members or friends.

Not enough time to prepare or when I am feeling stressed.

Not enough time to thouroughly complete assignments, especially at the end of the semester.

not yet , however these comments are for teenagers not adults

Ok, refer to question one.

once, freshman year almost every member of one of my classes cheated during the final. the teacher expected us to have learned like 10 chapters in two weeks and most of it we had not even gone over it in class. therefore, many people relied on cheating to pass the final.

overwhelmed with workload, especially because i attend school and work full-time. often professors are unwilling to accommodate and revise their schedules when yours is full. for example, one week i had three exams, a final, and two papers due. not one of my professors was willing to change anything, they told me this was how college is.

PASSING!!!!!! DUH .....not wasting our money for the class becasue a proffessor is unfair and makes the class impossible to get a good grade in.

Personally I haven't been engaged in any cheating behaviours. But I suppose the rationale behind students that do this is anger and desperation. There are some professors who are out to "get you." These professors give out more D's and F's. They don't want to see their students succeed. Some students cheat to get even with them.

personally, i have never cheated on an exam. i would rather fail because of my laziness. i have given other people help with papers and that is questionable.

PRESSURE OF GRADES -- PRESSURE FROM FRIENDS WHO ASK FOR ANSWERS

Questions on exam were of no relevance to what was studied and or you actually have no idea what the question is talking bout. Last resort to getting a lousy grade.

Questions were unclear or material in book conflicted with classroom instruction.

Sometimes I do not do footnotes for every single quote in my papers because it is something very tedious, useless, and time consuming. That does not mean that I do it consistently. However, if I just wrote a 20 page paper, that could be a lot of quoting and a very long works cited page. In the country where I come from, it suffices if you just list the books you used for a paper. Stopping every time for footnotes damages the pace and the concentration a student needs to write a clear, concise and logically consistent paper. In addition, footnoting is a bastard legacy of medieval scholasticism, when things where true because Aristoteles Dixit. I reject that kind of practise. I also doubt professors ever check the sources of the information. It is an almost impossible effort for for a professor to check 15-20 quotes x 45 students x 2 papers x 3 courses a semester. Suppose it takes just a minute to check every quote... It doesn't seem much. However, it amounts to 4050 minutes, which is about 67 hours of work.

sometimes I will "cheat" because the fact of whether or not I memorize certain information on certain tests or bring it on peices of paper is irrelevant to myself, my future, and anything else except for the mom=ent in time I need to recall a formula on one test in the whole of my life time

Sometimes it seems that no matter how hard you work you do all the work the teacher themselves didn't do a good enough job or the book wasn't written well to enable you to pass the test. The only choice then is to try to control the situation and bring in a real life skill. Cheating isn't always because of lazyness sometimes it's just help. Help that is no different from looking things up in the dictionary. In real life if you got yourself into the situation that you didn't know the solution what would you do look it up. If a doctor can't remember what perscription works best and isn't sure should he guess as he would have to on a test or look it up.

Sometimes one test is the difference between getting an A/B in a course, and even if you study really hard, sometimes you just want to check your answers to try to pass.

Sometimes you do not understand something and no matter how hard you try you can not get it and if you do not get it sometimes you feel like that is your last option.

Sometimes, it gets hard to maintain high grades with a full-time job and a full course load. Half the time, preparing the crib sheet allows me to retain some more information. It just helps to make me more at ease at test time to know that the answers are there if I need them.

Stress can be so overpowering that sometimes you feel better about a test if you write down little hints. Sometimes people do't even use them, but just having the reassurance is nice.

The most common reason my friends give is that they are too stressed about other work to do that particular assignment.

The only time I "cheated" is listed in the above question. I wrote a good paper and decided to use parts of my paper for my other paper.

The only time I may have cheated in any way would be paraphrasing work from various Internet sources or books. My rationale is that after reading from so many sources, everything begins to sound repetituve and you cannot find other ways to compose your thoughts (because everyone took them all already =)).

the only way i cheated was by using the same paper for 2 different classes. I did it because it was the same exact assignment.

The student always justifies it---'the professor is a jerk', 'this isn't fair', 'I don't have time to do this', etc.

The teacher did not explain thngs as clearly as they could have.

The test or teacher was not fair to some degree in my mind therefore I felt it rationalized to take other methods of securing a good grade.

Too much course work is piled on students all at the same time. It is impossible to complete if you like to eat and sleep.

Unable to read all assigned materials, just to check my answers against someone elses'.

unprepared

Unpreparedness for a test or paper.

Wanting so bad to get a good grade....

well i have helped some friends by telling them what the test was like in a course if they have the same test later on that week, but that is only so they would feel less pressured on a test. however, sometimes it doesn't work because professors usually change the tests.

Well, laziness, I guess. And I tend to believe that most of the stuff in an exam will be forgotten shortly even after I memorize it. So why bother...

When I have cheated in the past my reasoning was that no matter how hard I study i still did poorly on test.

When it rains, it pours. Papers are usually all due in the same time frame for all classes, and it adds up quick! You get used to doing nothing all semester, and them BAM! Extentions are no biggie, and teachers don't mind giving them if there's a valid reason. Sometimes stress can be!

While pressed for time, I once sourced an inncorrect page number however the information was from that source. I simply couldn't find the page I had paraphrased from and decided to guess.

Why does anyone cheat? To make their own life/academic struggle easier.

Work was too hard. Needed a little edge.

yes, lazy

Suggested Changes to Policy

*none needed the system is currently working well i believe.

Academic integrity is extremely high for Ramapo College, thus, I feel that the trend the college is taking in judging academia matters is going smoothly. Students should be able to have a say in how harshly a person is judged for an academic crime seeing has how they may be able to relate better to administrators the right course of action

Academic integrity? Who's calling the kettle whatever color? What is "integrity," let alone "academic integrity,".. all personal, subjective.. ethics taught by who? puke, puke... who cares....

As far as attendance policy, I am usually at every class. But, i've noticed that for my classes that are 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 hours, when we leave for break, many students do not return. This has led my one professor to take attendance after break as well as at the beginning of class. I think this should be mandatory because I feel that they are not penalized in any way and will receive the same attendance grade as I do.

Before they kick someone out of school for cheating, they should find out the main reason why they cheated and instead of kicking then out, they should help the student out.

Certain teachers use students work for examples. I have seen teachers keep the student's name on a paper, and that can be very embarassing for the student.

continue enforcing the rules. students should play an active role

dishonesty is a problem at the self level, that needs to be understood and overcome before anything else

Don't know

Educate the student's in proper research methods, how to cite information and provide constructive criticism rather than destructive put downs. Offer classed designed to improve writing and research skills.

Emphasize on what is really defined as cheating, and the results of being found cheating.

EVERY teacher should change the questions on exams if he/she has multiple classes on the same course. it should be school policy. it should also be school policy to rotate major assignments from year to year so that there isnt any "borrowed" work. and this may sound dumb, but proffesors should "stay" in the class during a test and "observe" whats going on durning the exam instead of reading a magazine. maybe then it would cut it down a little

Explain what it is in all of the students class not just one paragraph or couple of sentences but in details.

For the school, they have to understand that students sometimes do not transfer information well from their brains to the paper so they find someone else who can clarify their thoughts and use those sources. Students should play their own cards. You deserve the consequences of your actions and the majority of the time students know they can get in trouble.

From the time I have been at Ramapo, the little bit of cheating I have seen has be notced by professors and handled ain rational and professional ways.

Give every student ACCUSED of plagarism a fair trial.

Give students an incentive to watch for cheating and turn them in.

Have fair assesments and fair assingments.

Honestly, I don't see any reason why I should turn in my fellow students for cheating. The truth is that if they cheat, they aren't learning anything, and it's not my place to try and make other students have higher morals.

I am in the dark on this issue.

I am not sure if students should take an active role. Instead, they should have a proactive role; they should not help others cheat. Students can't be responsible for others. In my opinion, that is the professor's role. Student policing could quickly become a way to get revenge on others, and that would undermine your intent.

I believe that once professors become aware of the loads various students carry and not act as if their class were the sole purpose of higher ed, than cheating would decrease. Many Prof. forget that we are not only taking their class and behave ridiculously with the level of work they assign.

I do not know

I do not think it's the students responsibility to monitor their peers. We are all old enough to be responsible for ourselves and if a person decides to cheat, I do not feel that I should be the one to say something about it to the professor.

I do not think that athletes should have special privelages. I feel that having an attendance policy is rediculous because the teachers usually miss more class then their own policy says that one can have before they fail. Finally, being required to leave campus on ones own to meet the teachers and students for an class "trip" without the school having some sort of driving arrangement set up for them is unfair to those without cars.

I do not think that it is the students obligation to turn someone in for doing so. Teacher's should watch closely while students take a test.

I don't cheat and I haven't seen anyone do it so it doesn't matter to me.

i don't even know my schools response is with regards to academic integrity or their policy on cheating. however students role is integral in prosecuting cheaters. they have a better understanding of the students current lifestyle and maybe can determine if rationale for cheating is acceptable

I don't know

I don't know

I don't know much about the consequences of cheating on campus. Actually, I know nothing.

i don't know what changes should take place, students should be involved in the making of the rules.

I don't see any need for change of behavior at this time.

I don't think any changes need to be made.

i dont think any punishment is going to make all cheating go away...if a teacher walks out of the room during a test, cheating will happen, and im not going to tell on them.

I don't think students can be expected to "turn in" their friends. It's not very realistic.

i don't think that students should be involved in this process.

I don't think that students should play a large part in this process at all because we have many other things to worry about. I don't know why we should have to worry about everyone else around us too.

I dont think we should change the polies at all. I think that students are now older enough to know the difference of right and wrong and if they want to cheat they have to pay the consequences. I dont think the school should make the students against each other though. Students dont usually turn each other in for cheating.

i feal that there should be a type of honor code that the students and the teachers are aware of.

I feel that professors teaching the same course should discuss the material they are implementing. Some of my professors are assigning work for my classes that is not needed. It is work that does not measure my ability in any way at all. It does not represent what i have learned, nor does it show my capabilities. I feel that it is just "excess" work that i do not need. Professors need to teach what is important and needed. Extra work is not necessary unless it is for a specific reason such as Writing intensive (which it is usually not!) Students end up cheating and taking the easy way out, because they see that these assignments are pointless and are not important compared to what needs to be done for other classes..

I feel that teachers shouldn't accuse students of cheating without rationally hearing them out. I know that a lot of teachers feel that if one has 'plagerized' even 2 words, they are in serious trouble. They should take into account the student's GPA and past record to see if they are a constant trouble maker.

i find more poecheat on tests, so maybe seperating students during test would be good, or making 2 tests witht he same questions just mixed up.

I have never witnessed any inappropriate behavior nor witnessed any discipline. I don't know the consequences for such behavior.

I have seen professors paying a lot of attention during the exams. They just don't sit there is read a newspaper or something. If you do think about cheating, most people I think would be scared and that is because there is a great change of you getting caught.

I haven't been here long enough to judge that.

i really don't have one

i really honestly don't know much about it, so i guess more awareness.

I think a big part of why so many students cheat is because nothing is ever really done about it. I can't imagine any student actually turning in one of their peers.

i think honor codes work really well, but usually only at smaller schools whose students are more interested in learning than in grades

I think it is wrong to specifically ask students to monitor the academic integrity of others. It is not my job to monitor other students and it is wrong to put me in that posistion.

I think professors need to pay more attention while students are taking tests. Many professors read while tests are being taken, and are completely oblivious as to the actions of the students during the test. Some teachers even leave the class room while tests are being taken, which is obviously an open door for students to cheat. It should not be the students job to be a watch dog during examinations to make sure others aren't cheating. To me, this falls under the responsibility of the professor.

I think professors who make themselves extremely available for their students to go over their research or prepare for a test will see less cheating in their classes. But students also need to take the time to get help and understand their materials so they don't feel the need to resort to cheating.

I think students should take the consequences for cheating more seriously.

i think teachers should be more responsible, not other students.

I think that our school is doing a great job!

I think that professors need to be sensitive to the fact that many students at this college work many hours because not many of us can rely on our parents for money. With that understanding, the work load or time and help in which to complete it might increase.

I think that Ramapo should make its students more aware of its policies. I don't have a student hand book and I do not know most of the rules. I also think that we should be more structed. I transferred from a university and each student had 2 mandatory meetings with their advisor per year. This was to make sure they were aware of the rules and to make sure that they were on the right track.

I think that the faculty should be more vigilant during testing and they should penalize students for cheating. Also, I think that faculty should take more responsibility in discouraging a testing environment that is conducive to cheating (i.e. switching to a larger classroom, circulation different exams between course sections and within the same section).

I think that the policies for cheating are made clear in our student handbook, and some, not all professors go over the policy in their syllabuses. Students make their own choices to cheat and if they get caught, they know the consequences. Students don't have to play any role in this process. If they decide to report it then they do, if they dont, then it will continue to go unnoticed.

I think that there should be some kind of annoymous phone number to call to report people, because most people are too shy/embarrassed to approach their professor about a cheater.

I think that we should have all students sign an honor code during orientation or their first time with their counselors, if any incidents of cheating come up them we could bring that code signed by the student and proceed with diciplinary actions.

I think the college has to pick one response to cheating and stick with it rather than the teacher determining for the most part the consequences. For example, if cheating is proved, does the student fail the course or the test?

I think the college is taking an active role in stomping out academic dishonesty. Faculty members need to be trained to detect some of the creative forms of cheating students pursue. Students must be educated better to understand the implications of academic dishonesty

I think the current system is all right.

I think the rules about academic integrity and the support are perfect now.

I think we are ok te way we are

I want the school to be even on it's process and fair. Don't turn students over to a judicial board just judge them against the rules that should be known. If "A" does x then "B" will happen no one person gets off unfairly.

I would like professors to be more alert of people cheating, the people that think are good students really aren't.

I would like stronger penalties for students who cheat and better ways of indentifying cheaters.

i would like to have a report coming out of how many people have cheated and what happened to the student because i know it happens but you don't learn the consequences which could be the reason that people continue to cheat.

I would like to see more panda bears around campus...They are very nice.

I would like to see more professors stressing cheating practices. i have found that many are not aware of the whole picture. They often feel it is only with writing word for word without referencing. And there are different ways to cheat on an exam that are not clear to some. For me, you are cheating if you ask what is on the exam you have yet to take. I believe the student answering is just if not more responsible in this cheating practice.

i would like to see that the school take more initiative in enforcing academic integrity in the classroom. one of my classes last semester was appalling becasue during both the midterm and the final almost all of the students cheated and got away with it.

i would like to see the school publicly tell all the rules of cheating and not leave it to the proffessors disgression. and you should not put the students in the role of what is wrong and not ..let the prof. figure it out that is why the school pays them!!!

If people want to cheat their way through college courses, I don't really care- that's why I don't report it when I see "peers" cheating. I think their lack of integrity will backfire later in life.

If students are declared innocent of cheating by the school, then the school should not leave it up to the teacher to make a grade change accordingly, because it is very unlikely the professor will change a grade when they suspect someone has cheated, even though they may have not have been proven guilty. There definitely needs to be a change in this process.

I'm and older student going to class part-time. I'm not sure what the studnet involvement is with regards to acedemic integrity. But I feel they should be highly involved. Cheating students may respond to their peers more than a faculty member.

I'm not sure

I'm not sure there is anything the school could do more. Is there less cheating at Brown, Princeton, Yale? I'm not sure. Are there schools out there who have less cheating? Look at those models, see what they do. Though I doubt there is any type of stand the school could take that would override the larger cultural context of American culture.

im unsure, the work load is very hard tho, and very time consuming, so id fix that. students cant really do much, we are powerless

Instructors should address cheating when exam reviews are conducted or when written papers are assigned, not wait until last minute before exams are taken or papers turned in.

it is very difficult for students to report other students. many are afraid of what will happen if they are found out. i think professors should take a much more active approach to the cheating.

it will never change. people will always find a way to cheat.

It's fine as it is.

its good as is

It's not the students' job to be monitoring others and telling on others.

Its okay as it is.

Less information on tests. Study guides

lessen the punishments

Letting everyone know the seriousness of cheating.

More discussion on what plagerism is, and the often fine line between paraphrasing and cheating. Students realize that by cheating they are only harming themselves and devaluing their education.

More than one professor has required all students to sign an acknowledgement of the "cheating policy" at the outset of a semester. This pretty much drives home Ramapo's "no-tolerance" policy. This is good. It might be hard to expect other students to report on their friends, but they can be urged to Not Be a Paty to the offense.

My friend told me that last semester when taking an exam her professor kept leaving the room. Everytime he did a group of friends kept giving each other answers. A professor shouldn't leave the room during an exam. It just leaves an open window for students to cheat. And even when only a small portion of the class cheats it can lead to trouble for the whole class if anyone gets suspicious of the grading.

My really good friend got put on academic suspension for cheating, and she did not cheat. Your system is garbage.

no changes

no changes

No changes are necessary.

no changes, it's good as is

no clue

No teacher should leave the room during an exam.

NONE THIS SCHOOL IS A WASTE! WHAT IS THE POINT ON BRAGGING WHEN WE ARE NOT EVEN A MAJOR SCHOOL>

not much. this is a serious penalty and if you are going to do it and get caught you have to except the penalty. The trick is to not get caught.

observance of professors and more frequent re-evaluation

Offer cash bounties to students ?

offer more extra help, tutoring, professor help sessions. as of now, there are many classes where students have no resources to go to for help or guidance..................some schools have tutors for each course they offer!!!!!

Personally, if I witness another student cheating, I am not going to rat them out. It is their own honesty and conscience that they are sacrificing, not mine. And I do my best to protect myself from other people cheating off of me. Every student should be held responsible to protect their own work.

present state is mostly sufficient

Probably talk more about it, especially during class...its good to be reminded about academic integrity because you forget especially if you hear of others getting good grades by cheating. students should try to encourage each other not to cheat and the consequences of cheating.

Professors should be more vigilant during exams, the cheating that occurs (though I have only personaly seen it once) is reputedly quite blatent. Thoush students probably should report other students cheating, as it is in their own best interest, I feel it is extremely unlikely to happen at this type of school. Therefore the brunt of the work in enforcing acedemic honesty will have to fall on the faculty.

Professors should be more vigulent on watching students to see if they cheat or not.

Professors should give students real world examples/consequences of workplace dishonesty to help students avoid academic dishonesty. (example, EnRon, WorldCom, doctors/lawyers/accountants/architects, etc who "cheated in college/grad school" before "cheating on the job" which puts consumers/clients/patients/residents' holistic health/welfare/safety/security/well being in serious jeopardy

Professors should not leave the class room, and should keep watch on the students more closely. They should also REALLY change their tests for each test (even if it's two tests for two sections only an hour apart).

Ramapo shoud tell each new student of the policies in place. I was never talked about this.

randomized tests

Require Professors to change their exams/assignements from year to year if not semester to semester. I also feel that independent procturing of exams would help prevent students from cheating. Additionally, I think that Professors need to be help responsible for their students Academic performance. If 95% of a class performs poorly in a class, then there needs to be a review as to _why_. If a professor is a poor instructor, or has lost the desire to teach and knows they have job security, then the student has no reason to work. The can neither effect the Professor's performance, nor succeed under it, so they will often resort to passing by any means necessary.

someone gets caught cheating automatic failure

Stop babying these kids. They are young adults and they need to be "slapped" hard for cheating. I think one strike and they are on probation, strike two and they get the maximum. Some of the young people have a total disregard for the instructor and rules in general.

Students are not responsible for each other. Everyperson has their own will. Have an instructor make a speech about the honors system..... very few people will cheat or do things wrong when presented with th ehonors system.

Students at an earlier level--say freshmen year, should have a better understanding of what cheating is: For example, students can get into trouble for paraphrasing improperly when classes like research methods are usually reserved for juniors or seniors. It would be helpful if the college taught students their expectations early on in the college process. I'd actually promise better grades if students had this opportunity.

Students in Ramapo are of great integrity, of what I've seen. I would just like the lab instructers to be more able to accept information that may not be perfect if the person has a good explanation for there mistakes in the lab, this way the student will find is unnecessary to make up false information.

Students must be empowered, along faculty and stuff, in order to ensure the fairness of academic trials. I think something should be done in order to normalize (in a mathematical sense) grading. An A or a B should mean the same for everyone. However, getting an A in business courses is so much easier than getting an A in a senior level Math/Physics/Chemistry course. The coursework difficulty and course level (200,300,400) should be REALLY standardized across the college. Yes, what I am saying is that a graduating Info Systems major should be doing work of equivalent difficulty to my Quantum Physics course. And I don't think they are.

students should not play a role in turning in other students

students should only rat out other students when they feel necessary but I think teachers are responsible to find out who is cheating. I have enough to do as a student besides look for cheaters.

Students should play no role in cheating whatsoever. If a student manages to pass a class primarily because he/she is able to cheat on a test, then they will get no where in life. Furthermore, tests given where it is even possible to cheat (IE:multiple choice exams, fill in the blanks) do not tests the understanding of material anyway.

Students should play no role. Faculty is paid to deal with students, and should do so in the appropriate manner. By considering the students to play a role in this process (such as keeping an eye out for cheaters) we are being asked to perform a job in which you are failing to do.

students should realize that cheating will only help them to pass a class. My philosophy is that understanding a subject is more important than passing it.

students should report other students

Students should try to stop others from cheating.

Students would never "rat out" on other students. It would never work.

Teachers need to be more aware of what is going on in their classroom.

Teachers need to not all assign huge assignments at the same time. While it is on the syllabus at the begining of the semester, that does not mean we know nearly enough to complete the assignment so early. I would like to see an open book policy in all classes... if you don't know the info, you'll never find it in time to complete the test... but that way if you know most of it, the bit you can't recall because you've been cramming for four other course, you'll be able to look up

Teachers should always let the student know that they are going to be reported for academic dishonesty. Some teachers say they will not inform the student which I think is unfair because soemtimes the student could have simply made an honest mistake.

the people who cheat most commonly are irresponsible people in their lives as well.

The policy that is in place for academic integrity is something that I have reviewed many times. I was accused of plagiarism on a paper I wrote in one of my classes and do not believe I was treated fairly throughout the process. It did not make sense to me that the teacher would not discuss anything about where the problems have arisen in my paper. My paper was automatically turned in to the VPAA where I was given a meeting. After having this meeting, I still had no idea what I had done wrong because I wrote the paper myself. The VPAA said she would talk to my teacher and see what she says about the statements I made. Now to me, that part of the process makes no sense. There is no reason to have a "middle man" where information has more of a chance to get construed. If I was allowed to meet with the teacher to begin with the whole problem could have been knocked out and the teacher could turn the information over to the VPAA where she could provide the sanctions. To this day I still do no know what I have done wrong after countless meetings, phone calls, letters, and even a meeting with the VPAA and my teacher. I do not believe students are treated even remotely fairly through this process. If I was convicted for plagiarism and I did not even plagiarize, then how will any student ever be seen as innocent when they did nothing? I believe that more students that feel strongly about this topic, such as me, should be given the opportunity to serve on a committee for academic integrity.

The rules should be followed, and not decided on an arbitrary, case-by-case basis. Anyone who violates the rules and gets caught should be held to the same standard.

The school should have professors talk to there students on an off-classroom experience to understand how each individual student sees their environment in the classroom.

The school should monitor plagerism of web materials. In addition, the school should create assignments that students cannot easily cheat their way through.

the teaches should be non-biased of how they punish the student. the students should be left out of this due to the idea of telling on someone they do not like.

There should be an honor code. Students should sign a statement with each assignment/test. The school should emphasize education and not grades. There is an ethical piece to education that is missing in schools.

There should be no tests - work should be graded as well as participation.

worry about other departments of the school rather then cheating

you are doing a pretty good job so far

Ramapo Students

Final Open-ended Question

all cheating is wrong, no matter what the extent of it. and it all deserves to be punished.

all in all i think Ramapo's academic honesty policies are well thought out and from what i have heard, powerful and in use by most if not all professors

Although I don't like the idea of cheating, I will resort to it, IF A) I dont like the class (boring unimportant etc) B) There is minimal risk of being caught C) Its the difference between an entire grade ie B or A and D) For some reason I couldnt study for the exam. I will admit I have cheated on extremely rare occasions but only if I had to.

Another concern that I have is that it is not fair that if a student does mess up and cheats on either an exam or an assignment, it is not fair that the teacher will be biased from then on when grading their work. I understand that there should be penalties for cheating, but everyone makes mistakes and everyone deserves a second chance to be treated fairly. Just because someone does it once, does not mean that they will necessarily cheat again on something else.

As a student that does not drink alcohol I feel that Ramapo's alcohol policies are rather rediculous. Not only is the judicial system unfair but it is pointless.

Burying a short paragraph (if that) in a class syllabus serves only as a CYA for the professor. Addressing this unsavory topic should be included as part of the instructor's job.

Cheating is a bad thing to do and it is something that regardless of inquiry will continue on throughout the ages. People, especially administrators, may not like that statement but it is one that cannot be denied.

Cheating is a part of being a college student. Some are daring enough to try it and get away with it.

Cheating is bad and I know that it is wrong.

Cheating is bad! Don't cheat! Take credit for your own work, or go be a garbage man!

cheating is going to be a problem anywhere at any school. honestly, i believe its a bigger problem here because it isnt a good school with a reputation. (no offense) people come here because its cheap or they are forced to so of course they arent going to give a crap about how they answer the questions or not.

Cheating is impossible to limit completely but there are ways to moniter it. With further technology both catching and cheating will become more advanced.

Cheating is not overly discussed at Ramapo, or maybe I just don't know about it because I have never been in trouble... but this survey was honestly a waste of my time.

cheating is o.k.

cheating is only detrimental to the student who cheats- the action doesn't warrant expellment

Cheating is something absolutely normal, as long as it doesn't happen all the time.

Cheating makes me angry. I work very hard and when someone who cheats gets the same credits and grades as I do it makes me feel like my education isn't as valuable as it should be.These cheaters steal twice...once by not doing the work and second by stealing the reputation of my school. It makes me very unhappy that these students cause the instructors to be suspicious and rigid. Cheaters make it easy for themselves and difficult for everyone else.

Cheating undermines the learning procedure through falsifying one's understanding of material. As much as possible, I will avoid doing so.

Cheating will happen regardless. Students just need to be more careful abouy it.

From my experiences here at Ramapo there seems to be no encouragement to turn in fellow students who are cheating. And from my own personal expierence here, when a person does turn someone in it always ends up that no serious action is taken against the person accused of cheating. So basically it seems pointless to do anything about it.

FYI: I'm enrolled in RN to BSN program...there was no parameter for that. This course is given online so I could not answer much of the questionnaire, since I am rarely on campus. The students in my cohort are working professional nurses...I can't imagine any of them cheating. Nurses as a whole are conscientious, independent, and take pride in generating our own thought product. I wouldn't want to use someone else's work...but I can understand that when life gets stressful, people may "cut corners" or even rush to complete coursework and, purposely or not, omit footnotes, etc.

good luck

I am not aware of any cheating that has taken place in any of my classes. I am a nursing student. When I have taken gen ed classes, I don't know anyone in my class. I am older than my classmates and while I am on friendly terms, I don't think they would confide in me if they were doing anything illegal or unethical.

I applaud the Academic Affairs department for addressing this issue and I hope these surveys have been helpful.

i believe everything is ok

I believe that cheating is cheating and all cheating is wrong. The individual is responsible for monitoring his/her own behavior.

I believe that my school very unfair when they deal with people of different ethnic backgrounds. For example, I have NEVER seen someone of African American descent get in trouble. This goes for all cases in college, not just academically,

I didn't understand half of these questions, so therefore, this survey did nothing for me. Also, a bunch of these questions didn't apply, which made this a little pointless.

I do not feel that cheating is a major problem at Ramapo.

I don't consider speaking with another student to help you/guide you/give some advice cheating. (it's more like Mentoring). I ask plenty of my friends to help at times when I don't understand something and they have already taken the class.

I don't have any other comments

i don't think that cheating is a particular problem here at ramapo there are more serious things in life to worry about!

I feel that if a student is having a hard time grasping their thoughts or understanding the material, I don't think it's necessarily cheating to get help from other students. Many times it makes them feel more comfortable than sitting in a "special help" room.

i feel that the process used at ramapo dealing with academic integridity is completely bias on the teachers side. Students are left high and dry when it comes to any support system! This school is a sorry excuse for a liberal arts school

I feel, that as a college student, we are here by choice. We are paying for our schooling. We are paying to learn. If a college student should choose to "cheat" they are only hurting themselves. In the long run, that student will not be as qualified and will suffer. I feel that it is their responsibility and their choice as a mature adult to go about their learning in their own way. The students who are honest, will prevail. Faculty and staff should not discipline or repremand students. They should just go about their jobs and teach the many "honest and noble" students that are there to truly learn and get something out of their college education.

I found that the quality of students in the graduate program are responsible adults who take great pride in the work.

I have the same pressures as any other student who is older, working full time, raising a family and going to school. I'm sure these cheating students don't condone it with their children. What poor role models they are. And it make me feel that the degree I'm pursiung is worthless if others get can it by cheating while I'm working hard at it.

I highly doubt that this survey will provide any accurate data.

I know of one teacher who didn't change a thing about his class requirmets. He made you read six books and anylize them, same exact midterm and final, and oral/written assignments. I was shocked to see how many students took advantage of it and found other people who already took the class to get answers from. I was upset because I had to work very hard and I'm not doing well while other people don't have to do anything. I think the main reason people took advantage of it was because the work load was very heavy and you felt overwhelmed. Anyway, I plan on writting it up on the teacher avaluation as a suggestion to change his assignments.

I like that they take cheating so seriously but I have come across profesors that go to far. I once had a class where the prof. sent someone to the Provost for not citing their work correctly. The prof. would not let up that it was a mistake, the student was not cheating. I think that is a little extreme. Also I very angry that I got to Ramapo. Recently professors have been telling me that Ramapo is developing a reputation for cheaters and my degree won't really mean anything when I graduate. So I'm angry because this school is turning into shit and I'm PAYING to go here!!! I don't know if I'll be able to get a good job when I graduate because of this.

I love pandas!!

i never was a cheater or a theif. the only big cheating thing that i did was last semeter and i still feel guilty about it.

I think a blanket cheating policy will acheive nothing. I believe that policies should be designated by dept. or major (with an general format passed to them by the college).

I think people do it because there are not enough hours in a day to get everything you need to get done for school. Because students are not always fully prepared because of lack of time and stress, they resort to a little cheating. Sometimes the amount of info you need to know is too overwhelming.

I think that the majority of students on this campus do not realize the severity of cheating, there should be some examples posted, with no names showing the students what could happen if you cheat.

I think there is too much pressure placed on exams. I wish schools would begin to use other methods of testing that are less stresfull.

I think this survey is going to just be for personnal use of colleges to be aware of the way students cheat in order to penalize more of them.

i thought that a few of the questions were wrong, but i would not consider them cheating.

I would be more likely to report an incident of cheating if I knew the student cheated regularly to get through college.

I would like to say that a professor knows when someone cheats in his class, but he lets that person's punishment be decided by how much he likes that individual. Especially if you are a girl. So the moral is if you want to cheat in his class all you have to do is get him to like you first and then its OK.

I would like to see any facts or statistics that show the amount of cheating that goes on at Ramapo. Could you email me this information?

if all courses were taken and completed using a pass/fail grading system I feel students would no longer need to cheat. I think in the instance of acedemics cheating is something done by students out of what they feel as need. They need to pass or get an A to make daddy proud or get a B for a scholorship or an insurance break. Percentage points people!! get rid of them. peolple may cheat beccasue they need 5 extra pionts on a test to raise there average to an 86%. what does that mean 86%. B+, B-, B, help me!! It is demeaning, degrading, and insulting for the measure my supirior intellecual worlth to exist as some number divided by one hundred.

if it is not absolutley obvious and the person got away with it then they should be allowed to say that they earned that grade because they out smartted the prof. and the school. but if it is obvious have some punishments but not so harsh that the person is kicked out of school and has been tagged so that no one will ever trust him again and he can not get into another school. come up with some other form of punishment that wil not ruin the lives of a person that made a mistake.

I'm in the social sciences so most of the exams have been take home. However, in the few instances that I have had in-class exams, cheaters have been all over- usually trying to copy off of my own paper. I think the teachers should not get up and leave the room when an exam is taking place. Keeping an eye on the student body is a good thing- especially for the students that actually deserve the grades they receive.

I'm often in knots over my cheating. And everytime I do it i know i'm cheating myself out of the knoweldge i could be obtaining from the experience. I have not earned my 3.8 gpa. But in our culture knoweldge is sadly not important, money and connections are. With money you can buy your way to the top (look at our government). I'm not trying to justify cheating, i think it is catching up to us, people in the country are cutting more and more corners, and the US is getting dumber and dumber. Rather than getting better it will probably get worse.

Institute an honor code

Instructors should broach this (distateful) topic more often.

Is there anything you want to hear? i.e., from me?... cheating.... I'm still not sure what it means? getting an "A" at any cost, passing a course, doing whatever it takes to get whatever it is.. what's so important?... and to who?... and why?... more money, prestige, certainly not "knowledge".. so, my dear... what is it all for and about.. the game.. and "playing it..." according to the "rules,".. who's rules??? make your own.. support yourself... need no one and nothing... except, of course, the ultimate one... G..O..D.. who knows the difference and why...

It is almost impossible to stop cheating, and even at very large universities large amounts of cheating go on. The only way to change it is to change the types of tests given, or to not test at all. While it is widely accepted, yet criticized, that midterms/finals are a good way to determine knowledge, in reality they do very little for the student. Someone who is forced to memorize something for a day, will be less likely to remember it in the future. Projects, or research projects are much more important. Class debates help get students involved, especially if the classrooms were smaller.

It is not acceptable for freshmen to cheat but it is appalling when graduate students cheat on tests and plagarize their papers. The true meaning of education is lost when students go to school for degrees and not the education. As a medical professional I cringe when I hear stories about cheating and wonder how ethical that person will be in his/her profession. I have the utmost respect for professors who hold students accountable for personal integrity.

It is often the better students who cheat the most.

it seems to me like cheating has decreased from highschool into college. i don't think that cheating is really that big of a concern at Ramapo.

Like I said I strongly feel that plagarism needs to be explain in details to the students because I became a victim of being acused for plagarism and it I was not aware that paraphrasing or using other peoples ideas was plagarizing specially if you received permission from the person. and you learn and elaborate on the papers.

Most students don't seem to care about "intergrity" because this is "just Ramapo." Until the college gets a higher view in the students' eyes, they will not feel bad about questionable academic practices.

No, please I just want to finish this dumb thing.

Nothing about cheating, but teachers have to be more open to understanding that some students don't process information as easily as others and have difficult time with subject matter.

nothing else about cheating but i feel the college does not prepare you for the real world. the advisors do not support you nor do they help you with anything. they play favorites in this school.

One of my biggest fears as a student is being accused of academic integrity when I did nothing wrong. Such a situation happened to me the second semester of my freshman year, when my Psychology teacher accused me of plagiarizing a paper that I did thorough research on. She felt that the elevated writing style I used and points I made "were not my own words, (her) students don't write like that". While I did present her with proof and she ended up apologizing, I was incredibly upset by the situation, as other students I'm sure plagiarzed, yet did so at a level akin to their own intelligence and avoided getting caught. There needs to be more fairness in the process of determining academic integrity. The power given to professors to punish needs to be lessened in some cases, as it can do irreperable damage to a student's transcript and academic reputation when there's just as good a chance that the case is unfounded.

Personally, I believe cheating is immoral, a person who cheats should not be able to live with themselves knowing they recieve a grade that thye did not really work for.

research/studies investigating potential relationships between the dynamics of faculty-student interaction and academic integrity/dishonesty at Ramapo as compared to reserach/studies from/at other institutions is warranted

Some of your questions I feel are not necessarily "cheating" in context, just the process of sharing information with one's peers. For example, the "individual versus group work" question. Everyone shares ideas outside the classroom. It helps to foster ideas in one's own mind, which are unique and certainly not cheating.

students just seem to mind their own business when it comes to cheating as i do. some may feel that it is the responsible thing for a student to do if they see some one cheating. this college is very "clickish" and many peopke fear retribution of found out. the college can not protect anyone if someone finds out. i'm glad to have had a chance to take part in the survey.

test should be reviewed by authorities before given out,,,,,,,,,,some are not valid.

The philosophy of thought would lead one to think that there is no such thing as a purely original idea.

the school should make it fair for all students who cheat. not making the offense for cheating harsher for student athletes than students who commute and have no envolvement in school activities on campus

this is a good survey... hopefully it will keep students from being dishonest

This is an ethical school overall

this questionair may be a good idea, but one time said is more than enough. we disscussed this in the class ist day. but you know best your selves.

This survey was unproductive and did not have anything to do with my personal interests on this campus. I'm sure there are MUCH more SERIOUS issues that need to be dealt with IMMEDIATELY, other than plagiarism and various forms of cheating.

This website is not an effective way to deal with cheating. Most students falsify the data on this site to make it as inaccurate as possible for the faculty who are trying to use students to turn in other students. If a student finds a creative way to cheat and doesn't get caught, than good for them! They just found a way to beat the system. The majority of work given in this place is "busy work" and does not test the student on what they have truley learned. This school treats us like children by the work they assign and way the class sessions are held. Maybe the faculty should ask why students are cheating and not how to stop it. Students have cheated for years and will continue to do so.

Though I have seen people cheating during tests or have overheard students talking about cheating on other assignments, it's sometimes impossible to be certain, especially during an exam when I'm occupied with my own paper. Professors are often to blame, especially when they leave the room during testing for long periods of time, leave copies of the tests around where student assistants can read them or overwhelm students with work by trying to cover too much in too short a period of time. None of these things make cheating right, in any way, but they encourage it, especially among students who are looking for an "easy way out." Some students, unfortunately, would rather cheat than study, no matter what. Having said that, I feel the faculy is generally very clear about Ramapo's academic integrity policy and that there are many students who adhere to it.

you cant stop cheating... and sometimes it isnt "cheating" it is a mix of laziness with apathy. When the student actaully understands the material already and is asked to write long drawn out papers, or do repetitive homework assignments it is easier and you could say almost more time efficent to "cheat".

YOU GUYS NEED TO STOP WASTING TIME ON THESE STUPID SURVEYS. NOBODY IS REALLY GONNA TELL YOU HOW THEY CHEAT YOU DUMB ASSES. THIS IS THE MOST PATHETIC THING I HAVE EVER PARTOOK IN IN MY LIFE. AND IM REALLY PISSED THAT I HAD TO TAKE TIME TO FILL THIS OUT JUST SO THAT I CAN PARTICIPATE IN HOUSING SELECTION. DON'T YOU KNOW THAT WE NEED TO DO WORK.
