Faculty Assembly President's Report Nov. 09, 2005 -- Kay Fowler

New FA format:
This is the first faculty assembly under the new guidelines.  We have eliminated regular "reports" and reserved time for just those most critical.  As you have requested we have a timed agenda and we will stay with the times allocated.  Jim Morley is going to sit up front and be time keeper to remind speakers.  Comments from the floor can be no longer than 3 minutes.  As always civility will be the coin of the realm in our discussions. The Provost has asked for any extra five minutes for his report and I have granted this so that item will be ten minutes.  Oral reports are reports only -- not discussion items.  Comments or questions in response to the oral reports (mine, Sandy's, Scotty's, Edna's) should be addressed to the appropriate person outside the meeting time so that the agenda does not get sidelined.  Directly following today's Faculty Assembly Sandy, Martha, and Stephen Klein will hold a Q&A here regarding CEP so please hold your questions on that topic for that session.

No FA donation to Katrina victims; lunch will be served at in-service

To my chagrin it turns out that the Faculty Assembly cannot legally donate college money to the Hurricane victims.  Hence, with apologies, the vote regarding donating our lunch monies from Jan. in-service to the Katrina victims is null and void.  There will be lunch served at in-service day.  You are encouraged, of course, to do as much as you can individually to bring help and comfort to the victims of Katrina, Rita, the Pakistani earthquake, etc.

New Board of Trustees Committees

The Board has established 2 new committees this year: A Board Ethics Committee and an Audit Committee.  The Chair of the Board, Tom Zelante requested nominations for faculty reps to the Ethics Committee and chose as the representatives Donna Crawley, Stephen Rice, and Roger O. Johnson.   He asked that the single faculty representative to the Audit committee be chosen in the usual way (i.e. elected by the Faculty Assembly) and we will be closing nominations and voting on that position today.  The Student Affairs/Alumni Affairs Committee has been merged with the Academic Affairs committee and Sharon Rubin who was elected to be the rep to the SA/AA Committee will become the rep to the combined committee and I will be there, at the invitation of the Board Chair, as an ex-officio representative.  The other Board committees remain the same and the elected representatives will remain the same -- i.e. Eric Weiner, Capital Improvements, Judith Peck, Institutional Advancement, and Murray Sabrin, Finance.

Re: Scheduling of make-up exams please note:  Residence Halls Close 12/23 6pm

Message from Residence Life: "As you are aware, the academic calendar for the Fall 2005 semester ends on Friday, December 23.  The residence halls will close on Friday, December 23 at 6:00pm sharp.  With the academic calendar so close to the holiday, it poses travel hardships  for many members of the residence life staff.  This is a very anxious time for our staff as they would like to get home to be with their families for the holidays, just as the student body will.   We are reaching out to you in hopes that you could help us spread the word to deans/faculty/staff here at Ramapo.   In the past, we have struggled with students requesting to remain beyond the specified check-out time to make up exams they had to reschedule.  While we do understand that there are some cases which are unavoidable, it would be most helpful if make up exams for resident students are rescheduled before the halls close.  We ask that they be very mindful when rescheduling exams for students. Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated."   Sincerely,  Stephanie L. Barlow  Assistant Director Residence Life
