On Thurs. 10/29 former United States Poet Laureate and Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress Robert Pinsky appeared on campus for a wonderful reading and Q&A session. Below he speaks to some Literature majors and other Ramapo students:

 

 

 

Here are some pictures from Prof. Kisor's Spring 2009 LITR 208: Shakespeare’s Plays course.
Students' Final Project called for them to perform their interpretations of scenes from a variety of Shakespeare's plays (later defended in a paper); below are some pictures of scenes from Julius Caesar and Acts One and Four of Much Ado About Nothing.

 

CLUB NEWS!

The next meeting of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society is on Thursday, Oct. 8th at 1pm in A108/109.

 

The Literature Club meets on Wednesday nights at 10pm in the second floor lounge of ASB. Meetings generally last an hour to two and people usually bring their work, most often poetry, to share and critique, though meetings are not limited to that content.

Attention all Ramapo Students:

TRILLIUM, Ramapo’s literary magazine, is accepting submissions. TRILLIUM has
been published by Ramapo’s students for 30 years.  Join that long tradition and
submit your writing to TRILLIUM!

WE NEED THE FOLLOWING:
Your writing:
POETRY, FICTION, CREATIVE NON-FICTION
Your visual art:
            PHOTOGRAPHY, PAINTINGS, ILLUSTRATIONS, SCULPTURE                                                 (please send photographs of your sculpture!)

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR TRILLIUM, SUBMIT YOUR WORK BY January, 2009.

Work can be submitted to trillium@ramapo.edu OR dropped off at the AIS office (B213). 

When submitting ARTWORK, please do not submit your only copy.  Email images of your work or drop off COPIES of your work in B213.

This semester, Literature welcomes its new Convener, Patricia Ard. Wish her luck as she embarks on her tenure as Ramapo's third Literature convener in 30 years!

This semester, Ramapo is hosting a variety of wonderful, literary-themed events. Please plan to attend:

From 1997 to 2000, Robert Pinsky served as the United States Poet Laureate and Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. Pinsky will be on campus for a reading on Thurs. 10/29 (place & time TBA). This is a wonderful opportunity. Read about Pinsky at Poets.org.(See disclaimer below.)

  • The School of American & International Studies Film Series: Features important International Films and will feature a discussion session with an AIS faculty member.
  • The American Studies Film Series: Spotlights important American Films.
  • Communication Arts’ Cinematheque Series: International films and television.
  • Any play at the Berrie Center.  (Like A Couple of Blaguards by Pulitzer Prize winner Frank McCourt [author of Angela’s Ashes and Malachy McCourt] with Guest Appearance by Malachy McCourt Sunday, October 4 3 p.m.). “These master raconteurs have laced their combined experiences growing up in Ireland, and their escape to America into a vaudeville of comedy, Irish songs and a gallery of relatives, rogues, fools and petty tyrants.” (See disclaimer below.)
  • Thursday, September 24, 1 p.m. Friends’ Hall: Dr. Temple Grandin. One of the most accomplished and well-known adults with autism in the world, Temple Grandin offers remarkable insight into animal behavior from her unique position at the intersection of autism and science. (See disclaimer below.)
  • Also, there is the Readings at Ramapo series. Contact Prof. Hoch for more information.
    • Monday October 12: Poets Alex Lemon and Beth Bachmann. Two young poets who write fairly intense material. Trauma and spunk seem to be what bind these two. Alex, author of Mosquito, Hallelujah Blackout and a forthcoming memoir, has dealt with a series of brain surgeries. Beth, author of Temper, focuses on the murder of her sister. However sad the facts of their stories, both authors manage to speak unsentimentally, bravely and eloquently. (See disclaimer below.)
    • Thursday November 12 The BLACK VOICE NOW series presents: Poets Michael Harper and Major Jackson for an evening reading and q and a. This series brings together two major voices, one established and one emerging, to discuss the state of African-American letters and culture.  Harper, Brown University Professor and Rhode Island Poet Laureate, has won nearly every award possible. Jackson, author of two books and finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, comes from University of Vermont. (See disclaimer below.)
