2007/2008 Math Events

Math Club, among its activities, organized a trip to the MAA-NJ mathematics conference in Spring 2008 and organized community service tutoring of mathematics at a local community center as well as on campus. This year's Math Club invited speakers were: Dr. Ken McMurdy ("Curve Sketching in Projective Plane"), a senior actuarial analyst Rob Curry ("Becoming an Actuary"), Dr. Pangyen Weng ("Making Presentations"), Wall Street's financial mathematician and a Ramapo College graduate Aridam Kundu ("The Wizards of Wall Street"). A team of 3 Ramapo students, consisting of Viktor Vasilev, Adrian Maries and Alexandru Maries won the 5th place as a team at the NJ mathematics competition at the Garden State Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (out of 36 teams competing). Adrian Maries placed 6th in the individual competition (of 91 individuals competing). Teams from New Jersey and nearby states took part in the competition. Two Ramapo mathematics majors, Corinne Bronder and Michelle Jastrzembski, (project advisor: Sara Kuplinsky) presented the results of their undergraduate student research at the TAS/SSHS Student Research Symposium. Click here to view the conference website.

A group of 6 Ramapo students participated in a prestigious, national Putnam Mathematical Competition. Click here to view the official Putnam Competition website.

2006/2007 Math Events

A team of 3 Ramapo students, consisting of Viktor Vasilev, Adrian Maries and Alexandru Maries won the 3rd place in school ranking at the NJ mathematics competition at the Garden State Undergraduate Mathematics Conference, trailing only behind the Princeton and Rutgers teams. 26 teams from New Jersey and area colleges took part in the competition. Two Ramapo mathematics majors, Zulma Valcarcel (advisor: Dr. Weng) and Ivan Ivanov (advisor: Dr. Potocka) presented the results of their undergraduate student research at the Garden State Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (Rowan University, NJ). Click here to view the conference website.

Three Ramapo mathematics students, Michelle Jastrzembski, Detelina Stoyanova (advisor: S. Kuplinski) and Zulma Valcarcel (advisor: Dr. Weng) presented the results of their undergraduate student research at the Ramapo's Student Research Symposium.

Dinner for Math Majors and Math Alumni took place in March 2007. (organized by the mathematics faculty, co-sponsored by the Dean of Students and Alumni office). The Alumni were happy to be back and gave some useful career advice to the current mathematics majors. Click here to view a photo.

Math Club among its activities organized a trip to the MAA-NJ mathematics conference in Fall 2006 and organized tutoring mathematics at a local community center as well as on campus. It also hosted two guest speakers. Dr. Jerry Ianni gave a talk on "Mathematics and Music". Dr. Potocka gave a math club talk on "Careers in Mathematics".

In April 2007, Dr. Weng along with a few Ramapo students judged posters at the North Jersey Regional Science Fair for high school students.
