Six years of careful planning came to fruition in January, 1995, when the MALS program at Ramapo College began. At its inception, the Ramapo MALS Program was judged outstanding by experts such as Dr. Phyllis O'Callaghan from Georgetown University and Dr. Raymond Callahan, University of Delaware Professor of History and MALS Director. Dr. Sydney Weinberg was the program's first director, from 1995 - 2002, followed by Dr. Mark Howenstein and Dr. Edward Shannon in 2003.

Dr. Anthony T. Padovano was appointed Director in January, 2004. As the result of a collaborative process between deans, directors, faculty, administrators, and graduates, a new program structure was created and a comprehensive outreach program initiated to update and expand the possibilities for MALS students at Ramapo College.

Exciting changes in the program include three Core Courses instead of four, and five Electives rather than four. A unique feature of the Ramapo College MALS degree is the opportunity to receive a certificate of concentration in a focused area of study in addition to a graduate degree. A certificate will be awarded to all students who complete at least two elective courses and a Capstone Graduation Project in the same area of study. Because of the broad scope of topics covered in the MALS curriculum, the student can work with his or her faculty mentor, second reader, and the Director to choose an area of concentration that fulfills the criteria for this valuable addition to the program.

In addition, Dr. Padovano will be bringing students and faculty together each semester for a dinner and program evening to encourage social interaction and idea-sharing within the MALS community.

The MALS program is ready to build upon its reputation for excellence with these initiatives. We invite inquiries from students at all stages of life and from varied personal and professional backgrounds to apply and join us for an adventure in learning.

NEW INTIATIVES TO EXPAND THE MALS PROGRAM

Fall 2004 marks the beginning of several new initiatives — advertising, a new MALS website, a complete and colorful new brochure about the program, and the beginning of a recruitment effort with visits to many area institutions.

An extensive advertising campaign will be launched in local newspapers and programs at art centers such as NJPAC and Bergen PAC. Program restructuring, some new faculty members, new courses and student activities will be among the changes taking place.
