If someone were to come up to me and point to another guy, and say, “dude, he’s a total punk rocker”, I would say, “Yeah?”, and then go and punch that guy in the face. If the guy fights me back, than I would have to say, “Yeah, your right”, despite whether he wins or not. I would say this because he fought me back, telling me that he’s a solid guy, and now after fighting we have a relationship that goes beyond any relationship between anyone else. I would know all of this because the guy I got into the fight with stood up for himself, put up a fight, and declared that he was not going to let me put him down, which are all elements of Punk Rock. However, these are all elements of Punk rock music. I would never call someone Punk Rock, because that stigmatizes the music to one kind of person, and how they live their life. Music and people are two different things, not to be confused with one another, however, they can be used to describe one another.
Punk came about for the music that does not have a place within social society music; it has become an outlet for non mainstream music. Punk rock embodies being raw, and the most extreme in your music. The music takes shots at government, authority, religion, conformity, society, and oppression; however this has changed with punks popularity in the public eye, due to the efforts of those who see Punk music as a way to better themselves financially by making a buck off of it.
Punk tells a story, it’s about where your from, what’s happened to you, and how life throws you in every direction. Mix that with a slightly out of tune guitar, a little distortion feature, and a drummer that kinda knows what they are doing, and there you have it, the most pure recipe for your most hardcore punk band. I feel that Punk has earned the title of “pipe bomb” in the musical world, and that’s because it’s so easy to make within the comfort of your own home; the simplicity of the way the music comes together makes it even more revolutionary.
Punk music caters to aggression, frustration, and strives towards independence; however, it also creates a trap that’s easy to fall into. The trap allures the individual with the music, but if that person is not strong minded enough to realize that its just music, and not a model for life, than they are doomed to be a punk rock victim, and that means they have become the newest identical recruit to an army that devotes themselves to being unlike everyone else. Punk rockers have a tendency to be extremely idealist, and most of them are so wrapped up in trying to be so different and independent that a lot of the time they are rebelling against something that probably supports their life style, that’s where the music stops and the scene begins. When Punk becomes a way of life instead of music than that’s when the elements of Punk music begin to fade away, and the fashion begins.
Elements of Punk are still present in the music today, but it has become something that it was founded against, and that is a scene. Being so inventive and defiant attracts people to follow Punk music, and allow it to become a scene, so essentially Punk becomes the new mainstream. Punk Rock has stayed away from its roots and been made into a scene where it cloaks those who want to be different with the idea that they are rebelling against something, while they are still the same, and probably don’t have a clue what’s really going on in there life to begin with, that makes them followers.
Essentially it’s like this, when you plan out something for a weekend, it never happens quite the way you think it will, or its over to fast, and thats somewhat of a let down. However, when you don’t plan things out, most of the time things just happen anyway, and you have a better time because you didn’t plan anything. Punk music resembles more of the second example, that’s because it doesn’t include that frame your planning everything around. The fun in Punk comes form the lack of structure, direction, and most importantly the ability to musically create something new from something so familiar.
