Moodle Course Development (online) |
|
Request enrollment date on registration form
|
This fully online course will expose participants to the features of Moodle most commonly used in teaching, beginning with an overview and progressing from the most common to more advanced tools. This course has a flexible format to meet your learning style — sign on every day or work at your own pace. Course activities include: readings, videos, Web sites, forum discussions and completing simple exercises. Discuss with other participants how (or if) this might work for you in your style of teaching and learning. Be exposed to everything in order to make informed Moodle choices. Some days, you'll do the minimum of ½ hour, just viewing the material and then reading discussions and posting why a feature isn't for you. While completing other topics, you might find a feature that really works for you and spend more time learning as you incorporate it into your 'practice course' - the choice is yours, and the Instructional Design Center Team is available to help you apply features to your course.

Moodle 100 |
|
Length: 14 days
Begins the 15th day of each month
|
Moodle 100 is a 1.0 CEU (10-contact hour) instructor-led, interactive online course. It is a prerequisite for all other Moodlerooms Training courses.
Over 14 consecutive days, participants should expect to spend approximately one hour each day completing Moodle 100 activities and preparing to build their Practice Course. Throughout this course, there are various tasks and assignments to introduce Moodle’s features and teach basic navigation, course layout and settings as well as how to add resources and enroll students. This course also prepares participants for course creation in Moodle 101.
During Moodle 100, participants will explore Moodle primarily from the perspective of the learner or student while they develop basic Moodle skills, become familiar with the interface and prepare to build their own course during the next class, Moodle 101 - Course Creation. This way participants will understand Moodle better from the learner's perspective, which will inform their instructional design choices later during Moodle 101 as they explore Moodle primarily from the instructional designer’s or instructor’s perspective.
Prerequisites: Participants should have basic computer and internet skills in order to succeed in this course. Before commencing Moodle 100, participants will complete several readiness activities to determine if they're ready to learn online.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- define basic Moodle vocabulary
- navigate a Moodle course using breadcrumbs
- edit profiles and add profile pictures/avatars
- post and reply to a forum discussion
- create a glossary entry
- analyze activity-based e-learning and the activity-based e-learning design process
- practice the Moodle philosophy of social constructionism
- describe the functionality of Moodle's standard activity modules
- plan and coordinate basic course settings
- integrate course calendar features
- manage student registration and enrollment
- create and add resources (e.g., text pages, web pages and labels)
- link to Web sites and upload files
- aggregate and co-locate digital (and other) Practice Course materials
- begin the instructional design process for a Practice Course to be developed or re-developed during Moodle 101
- identify practice course target audience, pre-requisites (if any), instructional needs and learning outcomes matched to Bloom's Taxonomy
- participate in a Moodle community of practice
Completion of this course makes individuals participating in the Moodlerooms Certified Trainer Program eligible for the One-Star Moodlerooms Trainee (1MRCT) designation.
NOTE: This training is for instructors. Register now

Moodle 101 |
|
Length: 14 days
Begins the 1st day of each month
|
Moodle 101 is a 2.0 CEU (20-contact hour) instructor-led, interactive online course.
Over 14 consecutive days, participants should expect to spend on average of one to two hours each day (depending upon prior knowledge, skills and experiences) completing Moodle 101 activities and building their Practice Course. Throughout this course, there are tasks and assignments to introduce basic Moodle course design, activities, modules and features that participants integrate into their own Practice Course to be used with their own students at a later time.
During Moodle 101, participants move from exploring and using Moodle from the perspective of a learner to doing so primarily from the perspective of an instructional designer or instructor.
Prerequisite: Moodle 100
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- analyze the social constructionist pedagogy that underpins the workings of Moodle, which includes collaboration, activity-based learning and critical reflection
- compare and contrast models for instructional design
- design or redesign an online or blended Moodle course by integrating accepted instructional design concepts
- manage a Moodle course and user accounts in the "Teacher" role using log information, acceptable use policies, course format and internet security and privacy
- modify/adapt Moodle's course settings, basic activity modules, features and resources to meet the needs of individual learner profiles, course content, learning standards and outcomes
- create and integrate high-quality content chunks into a Practice Course
- integrate the following standard basic modules into a Practice Course: Choice, Assignment, Forum, Quiz and Glossary
- demonstrate competency using the built-in Gradebook feature
- create and deploy their own Practice Course for actual instruction with their students
- participate meaningfully in an instructional learning community of practice
Completion of this course makes individuals participating in the Moodlerooms Certified Trainer Program eligible for the Two-Star Moodlerooms Course Creator (2MRCT) designation.
