LABORATORY REPORT GRADING POlICY ROBERT J. SHINE SEPTEMBER 26, 2009 1. A lab report is due one week after the completion of an experiment unless you are told otherwise via an email message. 2. The format of a lab report is presented in the Week 1 section of the lab manual. 3. If you are absent from a lab session, please email me (bshine@ramapo.edu) as soon as possible to discuss an alternate report topic. 4. A report will be graded as follows: a. The lab report grade will be some number between 0 (report not submitted) and 100 (report was truly excellent in all ways). b. A final lab exam will be given at the last lab session (see schedule on web page) and this test result will count as two lab report grades. c. All lab report grades and the lab test (counted twice) will be averaged to obtain your lab course grade. d. This lab course grade number will be converted to a letter grade as follows and will be then sent to your lecture Instructor to be included in your final overall course grade: A 94-100 A- 91-93.99 B+ 88-90.99 B 85-87.99 B- 81-84.99 C+ 78-80.99 C 75-77.99 C- 71-74.99 D 68-70.99 F below 68 5. The following criteria will be used in determining the report grade: a. The submitted report will be asigned an initial grade of 90 if submited on time. A starting grade of 80 will be used if the report is submitted late. Please note that no reports will be accepted after two weeks from the lab experiment date. b. The most important sections of the report are the abstract, results and discussion section. c. At intervals in the report a running score will be noted with some brief comments to give some indication of how the final report grade will be justified. A + and - sign will be used throughout the report to indicate the strong and weak sections. Any questions or comments about this policy will be discussed at various lab sessions throughout the semester. Important modifications and clarifications will be published via email messages.
