Hello--- POSTED MONDAY, July 1, 2012 Welcome to the Organic Chemistry course that will begin on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Ramapo College. What follows here is some information I would like you to know before the course begins. I will be adding information to this page periodically over the next few days so please check the site when you get a chance. If you have any questions, please email me at bshine@ramapo.edu. I expect to check my email a few times a day this week so you should receive a response within 12 hours or so. I have written a separate page about the course texts and supplies which you should read now. The link to that page is right below the link you chose to get to this page. I hope everyone can have a copy of the 10th edition of Organic Chemistry by Solomons and Fryhle (Wiley and Sons, publisher). There is no one particular ISBN number for this text as it comes in many different ways. The Ramapo College bookstore (which I believe already has the text in stock) will have two versions (hardcover and three ring binder version) as noted in the "books and supplies" memo mentioned above. The bookstore versions come bundled with Wiley Plus which is a web based learning tool. You will be able to survive the course without Wiley Plus if cost is a factor. If you buy a used binder version, be sure it is not missing any pages. And, since pages are easily lost from the binder version, the binder version has little or no resale value. However, I will require students to bring the chapter we are working on to each class so the binder version will be more convenient on your trips to and from the parking lot. If you get the hardcover version, lugging it to class will be good exercise as it is quite heavy. As you browse the course web site, please note that some of what appears there will not apply for our summer course. This is especially true for lab reports. I will describe in detail how the course will be conducted at our first class meeting. If you can bring your copy of the course text to the first class, that would be good. The first test will be on Tuesday, July 17th. A review session will be held during the lab period on Thursday, July 12th. The test days are given elsewhere on my course web site. The major portion of your grade will be from the lecture part of the course. I think the above and the "books and supples" memo should be enough for now. I may add some more information in a few days. In the meantime, please email me if you have questions. I look forward to seeing you next Tuesday. Bob Shine
