105 - Fundamentals of Earth Science
Description
An introduction to the study of the various systems comprising planet
Earth. The topics which will be examined include: an overview of the
rocks and minerals which constitute the Earth's crust; the forces which
form and recycle rocks and minerals (i.e., weathering, erosion, plate
tectonics); the structure and function of oceanic systems (which
comprise 70% of the Earth's surface); and the atmosphere and climate
patterns.
Target audience
- Environmental Science majors:
required.
- Environmental Studies majors:
fulfils 100-level natural science requirement (alternatives: SGEL 101
Introduction to Geology, SGEO 101 Physical Geography).
- Earth Science teacher
certification: fulfils 100-level earth science requirement.
- Others: can be
used to fulfil Gen. Ed. science requirement.
Prerequisite
None; SENV 103 recommended.
