Jan. 8th: Death Valley National Park

Zabriskie Point

Lake beds and alluvial fans

These are the same sets of Tertiary lake beds seen on the way to Scotty's Castle. The white areas on the valley floor are the salt pans of the Badwater area. On the far valley wall, there are alluvial fans forming bajadas.
Lake beds

These lake beds are the ultimate source of the borax that was mined in Death Valley. The sediments themselves are sandstones and shales (a finer-grained version of sandstone).
Lake beds and lava flows

The dark brown layer capping the ridge in the middle ground is a lava flow.
