Evaluations from October 12, 1999
Topic:
- Last Thursday's Incident-Elizabeth Kubler Ross on Death and
Dying
- Skin Deep
- "Why Do We Need To Do This?"
Rank today's presentation from 1 to 4 (1=totally useless and
4=Very useful)
1. Overall evaluation of class:
3.54
Can I give it a 16 maybe a
4?
2. What was the most useful or meaningful thing you learned or
insight you gained during the session?
- Skin Deep Movie
- That we really can make a difference about teaching
ourselfs(sic) about racism.
- VIDEO: Very insightful-hearing our generation's views-
- I feel totally uncomfortable being a conservative white person
in this class.
- I really enjoyed the video and made me think about everything
in a different way
- The movie made me realize my white privelege
- I realize that I am getting my voice journal right.
- The beginning of class stayed with me through the class. I
think that it's a really hard thing to talk about.
- Skindeep (sic). listening to other's thoughts and seeing that
they may or may not think similarly the way you do.
- A lot of people are still held back even I am. I have no clue
why.
- Skin Deep is an excellent idea in helping break down barriers.
Unfortunately it has to be done a ffew steps at a time.
- That there is no real equality. Everyone is discriminated
against.
- In the film when Leahn and Helen, the Asain (sic) students
said all I want is for you to remember my name when I tell
you
- The video, because I gained insight about other cultural,
educational, familial, + social perspectives about race
relations.
- that whites are treated better and need to look at that in the
future
- The movie made me really think, I enjoyed it! You discussed in
more detail what you expect of us Thanks!
- You can't understand what it's like to be in the minority
until it stares you in the face
- The "Skin Deep" video was very interesting. I liked the way
each person said, "I don't want you to..."
- I enjoyed the movie
- The perspectives of different races on racsim and what
influences them.
- Why Affirmative Action is needed: some people do not have the
same educational, environmental, etc. opportunities as others have
+ therefore Aff. Action is needed to balance things out
- My feeling about death/racism
- I learned that I have to stop being so uptight about race and
that I will make certain mistakes because I am only human.
3. What question(s) remain uppermost in your mind as we
end?
- Why so much racism
- what can we do, more than just recognizing racism.
- why people think the way they do
- who in here isn't liberal and isn't speaking up for that
reason
- No questions
- Affirmative Action. I'm still a little confused on what it
is.
- nothing really
- The film had too much aggression but a lot of honesty
- I wonder if not acting prejudice is OK if you still feel it
unintentionally
- Why can't we try to get along. We don't have to be "white" to
do so.
- I am unsure of what I think of Affirmative Action
- Is there really such a place of common grounds
- why are all whites put down as racist???
- Is there life after death?
- I have to realize where I stand on Affirmative Action
- Why did we have to write what we wanted on our tomb
stone.
- How is there going to be solutions for race problems when
everything is suggestion? How about action
- none
- I want to better understand the grading technique
- Is the fight between races ever going to end.
4. What was the "muddiest" point in this session? (In other
words, what was the least clear to you?)
- Talking about life, death, and are true Happiness. Screw
us for conforming, lets get out and feel the world
- We can really determine how our future might be according to
racism (Skin Deep).
- Comparison of cost of living. What does it really tell.
- I don't know if I like the idea of the final exam, I did that
in another class and did not agree with it
- none
- The suicide chat
- Affirmative action
- The suicide->it bothered me that people would assume that
the boy could have just as easily shot around at other
people.
- more about affirmative action...otherwise none!
- The video It was very conflictive (sic) at first but taught a
real good lesson on race
- Talking about death. I hate to even think about it! It freaks
me out!
- Nothing.
- What is the reason why people commit suicide? I think there is
no answer to that.
- I was really affected by the discussion on suicide. I have
experienced it 1st hand + people, can't judge someone who commits
suicide until they actually witness it 1st hand.
- N/A
5. Other comments:
- BandAids...clear is the way to go (the color of
water).
- I really like the breaks every hour.
- "The Sanest Days are mad"
- I enjoyed having class broken up the extra times
- The breaks work. We all discuss the class + it makes a 3 hr.
class more bearable.
- Breaks are effective. But where are the students going
afterward
- Great class discussion powerful video.
- The breaks every hour were great! It gave me a chance to
recolect my thoughts. I think you should keep it like this!
- I wear a cape.
- I think people who have judge(sic) others completely on what
they say or don't say need to look at themselves
