Creating an Oral Presentation Outline
CONSTRUCTING A PRESENTATION OUTLINE
1. Determine general purpose, specific purpose, occasion, format.
2. Put your topic in the form of a question.
3. Outline the body of your presentation:
· Indicate 3-5 main points that answer your topic question.
· Indicate 1 piece of "proof" (example, story, fact) for each main point, and its source where possible.
· Include a "verbal review" of your main points.
4. Outline the conclusion of your presentation:
· Re-ask the question and answer it, briefly restating "proof."
· Include a memorable "headline" ("sound-bite") to end your presentation.
5. Outline the introduction of your presentation:
· Include a "verbal preview" of the presentation to come.
· Include an enticing "headline" ("sound-bite") to begin your presentation.
6. Note audiovisuals to be used, where they will be used.
7. Note audience interaction techniques (Q+A, simulation, demonstration) to be used, where they will be used.
8. Time each element in your presentation, noting the length of each segment, and the cumulative length of your presentation at the end of that segment.
9. Readjust outline elements until cumulative time outlined meets time allocated for delivery.
10. Note elements to cut if presentation runs long when delivered.
11. Include stand by elements to add if presentation runs short when delivered, and where they will be inserted.
