Spring 2010: Topics Courses

HIST 290-01 American Indian History | MR 3:45-5:15 Meyer
This course will provide an introduction to American Indian history from the time of European contact to the present. Topics will include early cultural exchange and conflict, the formulation of federal Indian policy in the early republic, removal during the Jacksonian period, Indian wars of the late nineteenth century, acculturation and assimilation efforts of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the movement for tribal self-determination in the post World War II period. Emphasis will be placed on Native responses to the challenges of colonialism using a variety of primary sources, including art, literature, music and film.

Spring 2010: Seminars

HIST 410-01 History Seminar | TF 11:30-1:00 Elovitz
This seminar focuses on the use of primary and secondary sources to teach aspects of the historian's craft. Students will do close textual readings of primary sources and then examine how scholars approach these materials. The main theme is on first experiences in childhood and early adulthood, as recounted in autobiographies, and the impact of these experiences on adult leaders such as Charles Darwin and 20th century American presidents. How to identify the voice of the author will be probed. Students will prepare and present primary research projects on some aspect or interpretation of the seminar's topic.

HIST 410-02 History Seminar | R 6:00-9:15 Rice
This seminar will focus on American social and cultural history in the nineteenth century. This was a century of enormous changes in the United States, changes in where people lived, how they worked, how they communicated with one another and traveled about, and what they did with their time away from work. The course will focus on these and other changes, and will consider how people tried to make sense of their world in the fiction, photographs, paintings, and music they produced.

"Invisible and Visible Worlds in Early America, 1492-1850" will explore as themes the secular and spiritual worlds of early America.

New Faculty Members

Roark Atkinson

Roark Atkinson, Assistant Professor of American History, joined Ramapo college in Fall, 2008. His teaching and research interests include colonial America, cultural history in the Atlantic world, popular religion, and Latin American history. He previously taught at The New School in Manhattan, The University of Wisconsin at River Falls, DePaul University in Chicago, and Indiana University. He has also worked at the New York Historical Society and the Organization of American Historians.

Pinar Kayaalp

Pinar Kayaalp, Assistant Professor of Islamic and Middle Eastern History, joined the History faculty at Ramapo College in 2008. She had previously taught at Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Turkey. At Ramapo, Prof. Kayaalp teaches courses on Islamic and Middle Eastern History as well as survey courses in World Civilizations.
